I wasn't aware of Poppy's beef with the project, or that she even had a possible HBO series based on Liquor in the works. That is a drag for sure, and now I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing.
Before I had learned all that, I was actually pretty excited about the prospect of a David Simon production coming to New Orleans. Being from Baltimore, I understand how Simon can be very meticulous about his depiction of a city's specific reality and personality. (His other programs include "The Wire," "Homicide," and "The Corner" -- all brilliant and spot-on depictions of Baltimore.)
Of course, Simon is not from here, so there could be problems -- but he does seem intent on getting a lot of local talent involved, and I'm especially happy with his choices of Phyllis LeBlanc and Wendell Pierce in key roles. I'm not as confidant as Poppy seems to be in Simon's choice of Tom Piazza as a writer for this, though. I've been more impressed with Piazza's nonfiction and music-review-related works, and I'm not sure if he can really handle the street dialogue of New Orleans. I hope I'm wrong, but I'll have to see it to believe it.
Overall, I trust Simon's judgment and sensitivity to the locale's he chooses to work in.
Of course, my loyalties will always be with Poppy, who is my friend, so I am considerably bummed about that aspect of it.
