This is a question for you Louis. I've read some exceprts from the book including the one about Buddy and those two notes. Did you deliberately chose the notes of the Devil's Chord. Eb to A or A to Eb. Tritones. This is the interval which was proscribed by the Catholic church for many centuries because of it's psychological power and the consequent ability to experience "God" without the necessity for priests and chuches and the whole panoply of the Wholly Roman Catholic Church.
It surely cannot be just serendidpity.
Reading your piece led me to search for the Devil's chord the discovery of the truly amazing Mesopotamian scale and also revealed that the exact interval in question cannot be played in the Tempered(Tampered) scale we normally use.
I'd like to know
Regards Nick
PS. On October 3rd 1978 I played Tenor with Herman Sherman's Young Tuxedo for the Scene Boosters Parade in company with two young up and coming trumpet players called Greg and Leroy

Hi Nick -- Thank you for your interesting question.
I wish I could say that I did this on purpose, but in fact I chose the notes at random and was not aware of this concept of "the devil's chord" that you mention. Someone else mentioned this to me a while back and I thought they were pulling my leg. Now I feel the need to investigate further.
That sure is a strange coincidence.
Thanks again for the question -- and best wishes from New Orleans,
Louie
